For now, please wait until the next stable Linux client is released. 5.8.17 has problems that we did not notice in our initial testing. Also 5.8.11 does not provide the Family/Model/Stepping info yet that we need (see
this
link).

Alright, I'll do so, and I also noticed the cancellation email I got shortly later. BTW, I use Gentoo on my systems. Gentoo is usually on the bleeding edge at certain points. Right now, 5.8.17 requires Glibc 2.4. In fact, Gentoo currently has Glibc 2.5 available. So, you *can* run 5.8.17. There is currently a problem with Ubuntu Dapper and Suse 10.0 (and I think 10.1.) since they have Glibc 2.3. It isn't that anything is broken. It's just that BOINC was built with Glibc 2.4. I'm trying to convince people in BOINC Alpha that you *can* build BOINC with GCC 4.1 to get the improved benchmarks while still building against Glibc 2.3 for compatibility with older Linux systems. Also, I never use ebuilds for BOINC. I just grab the install file and drop it in my home directory on my system. - John Watzke |

At last there's an ebuild for Boinc 5.8.17. I have it installed on my laptop and it works fine! That's Great to hear! I must admit that Gentoo is a distribution I've never used. I'm too far from town so I'm stuck on Dial-up and get most of my Linux install DVDs from Magazines :-) In your opinion, what are the advantages of Gentoo over other distributions? Does the ebuild install BOINC in a single directory like /BOINC or /home/BOINC? Happy Crunching, -- David ____________ The views expressed are my own. Boinc is installed both in /usr/bin/ (the executables) and /var/lib/boinc/ (project folders and config).
