I have been sent two warnings from my provider that I am about to go past my download limit and will be shaped to a much slower speed.

Since I switched all my computers over to doing Docking along with a bit of MilkyWay I have found that my downloads have shot through the roof.

MilkyWay is part to blame for this as I am running the new Optimised application that is 50 times faster than before so work units only take 6 minutes instead of 5.5 hours. Hence a lot more downloads to keep my computer going.
But with MilkyWay not supplying enough work this is not too bad a problem.

However Docking sent out a shorter running WU that only takes 45 minutes instead of 2 hours and so I was downloading up to 400 work units per machine (I have 4 dual processor machines).
With each work unit having well over 1 MB each.

This has made me go past 1 Gb download/upload on 4 days now (6th and 7th of Nov and again 10th and 11th Nov).
On each of these occasions the 4 computers downloaded between 200 to 400 work units each

My provider counts both uploads and downloads toward my total limit of 12 GB per month, and up till these last two months I always had plenty to spare each month.
At the moment I have just 2.5 GB left (after just 15 days with 15 days still to go) before I get speed shaped back to 64 kb from 1.5 MB and this wont reset to the full speed again until the 28/11/08.

So sorry Docking I have to set no more work a bit early to try and stay under my limit.
Just too many large files get downloaded with each work unit.

Would it not be possible to download the main parameters once for each work unit type rather than for each and every work unit ??

My other option is to just scale back the amount of work I am doing for Docking and process work from projects with longer run times and smaller file downloads, at least till the end of the month when I get my account reset to zero so I can start again.

I'm so sorry to hear that. We really have in our priority list to change the structure of the work-units (and maybe the version of the application) to reduce the required bandwidth. I will try to do something about it when back from SC.

Also, after November 20 we will distribute workunits that are taking 3 times longer, that should help. In the meantime we all will have a break.

Regards

Read idea number 1 in this post I made over 2 months ago regarding this issue. I grab a task every once in a while to see if any changes to the download sizes have been made, but so far no improvement for those of us who are limited by our providers. I will be very happy if the changes Trilce mentions actually happen.

Yes BobCat13, indeed it was your idea what I was planning to implement in D@H. I just need some time =(

Which idea? 1 or 2? I'm just curious.

No problem, I'll be waiting and ready to throw a few cores on Docking when the bandwidth is reduced.
