Message 5029 - Posted 21 May 2009 17:57:04 UTC

My computer's processor is AMD Athlon XP 1600+, OS is Windows XP SP3, and RAM is 512 (256X2) MB SDRAM.

Last night my computer computed Docking@Home 1hpx workunits with BOINC manager Version 6.4.7 and Docking@Home Charmm 34a2 application Version 6.15, and it got compute error results when computing four 1hpx workunits. When this happened, I was using Mozilla Firefox browser at the same time. When my computer computed the fourth 1hpx workunit with computed error happened, the Mozilla Firefox browser was accidentally closed. Then the BOINC manager showed compute error messages like this:

2009/5/21 下午 11:50:57|Docking@Home|[error] Process creation failed: 分頁檔太小,無法完成操作。 (0x5af)

Those four 1hpx workunits that showed compute error messages are:
1hpx_mod0014_70333_438807_0
1hpx_mod0014_133803_346109_0
1hpx_mod0014_134036_445518_0
1hpx_mod0014_134195_271327_0

All the messages in these four 1hpx workunits are in the following:
<core_client_version>6.4.7</core_client_version>
<![CDATA[
<message>
CreateProcess() failed - 分頁檔太小,無法完成操作。 (0x5af)
</message>
]]>

Therefore, these four 1hpx workunits were invalid. And I found that such error happened in my computer for the first time. But later I found that other computers that computed 1hpx workunits got success results and were valid. I wonder if the RAM spaces in my computer is not enough when computing 1hpx workunits. So I let my computer run other BOINC projects like SETI@home and World Community Grid etc. instead of Docking@Home. Maybe I will let my computer run Docking@Home 1hpx workunits a few days later to see if the same error will happen again.

Hi Alberthuang,

It seems that this error happens when there is a crash with the virtual memory, it can be caused by external programs, leaks in the application's memory, or when BOINC has problems aborting workunits,
as in this case . So far this problem happens in D@H less than 0.01% of the time. Based on these numbers I think that the most likely explanation is for external crashes.

If you restart the execution of D@H tasks, please let us know if this error happens again so that we can explore alternate explanations.

Here is the description of the error in the unofficial BOINC wiki

Thank you, and keep us posted
