Hello,

Has anyone else been having problems with BOINC 5.8.0 on WinXP SP2 + all updates ?

I had it suddenly freak out and start blowing out Rosetta and Docking workunits. From the logs, it decided it didn't have enough disk space. The logs also said no result file.

BTW, this particular machine has a 72 GB drive with about 69 GB free space. It's set to allow BOINC to use up to 50% of the drive.

I finally had to reload 5.4.11 and abort all of the work units on that machine. I let it report the aborted work units first so they would be re-issued, and then reset the two projects on that machine.

It was a boinc only machine. Has anyone else seen something similar happen ?

To be honest, no I did not have any problems running 5.8.0 on XP-SP2.
Seti did not cause any problems. (currently back-graded to 5.4.11 because I also have Seti-beta running)
I also have a Vista-RC1 host with 5.8.0 and no problems there running Seti, Cplan (test project) and Leiden (only 0 credit sometimes due to result comparison).

Could be app related... my linux host now runs on 5.7.5 and Rosetta (5.43 app) also got "crazy", all wu's ended up with an error.
Link to the boards there.
Docking and Seti are running fine and also Leiden is doing well.

Tonight I will attach Docking to the Vista-5.8.0 host to see what will happen.

Will keep you informed.

;-)

Edit:
New docking host ID
Boinc prefs:
Disk and memory usage
Use at most 10 GB disk space
Leave at least (Values smaller than 0.001 are ignored) 0.1 GB disk space free
Use at most 50% of total disk space
Write to disk at most every 60 seconds
Use at most 75% of page file (swap space)
Use at most 90% of memory when computer is in use
Use at most 90% of memory when computer is idle

Last 2 were increased, default is 50%

I had also no such problems with 5.8.0 and the docking application on MacOS X and Windows 2000.

No problems so far... both cores are running a docking wu.

What I did see... Avast is constantly scanning the "1tng Security Certificate".
Don't know what other Antivir apps do with this item, but as for Avast this will increase the CPU running time I think.

The 1tng files are atom grid and checkpoint files; they are definitely not security certificates :-) That's what happens when Windows tries to deduct info by itself... it should leave the deducting to Sherlock Holmes ;-) Any possibility that you can exclude the boinc directories from your virus scanner?

Good to hear that things are running okay though!

Thanks
Andre

LOL...
I think it is because of the .crt extension that Avast is "harassing" the file.
Deduction should be doen by humans... ;-)

At first I was planning on doing so... but at its worst it is a good "stress-test" when leaving it on.
So I did.

Here the results for the wu's:

1tng_mod0001_17295_192915
(2 cores)
cpu-time: 29,511.33
real-time: 31,125.00
real-cpu: 1613.67
cpu/real: 0.948

1tng_mod0001_17721_228424
(2 cores)
cpu-time: 29,998.08
real-time: 32,083.00
real-cpu: 2084.92
cpu/real: 0.935

1tng_mod0001_17791_175951
(2 cores 877sec, remaining time 1 core)
cpu-time: 28,326.81
real-time: 28,623.00
real-cpu: 296.19
cpu/real: 0.989

I think you can see what happens when BOINC and charmm have to compete with Avast and the Vista running processes. (first 2 wu's)
The last wu ran with a system load of approx 52-54%
Difference between cpu-time and real time of that wu is a lot less.

Good to hear that things are running okay though!

Thanks
Andre

Your welcome.
