I just attached 4 of my machines, all running ubuntu 6.06 w/ all patches:

PII 366mhz
P4 521
Athlon X24200+
Core 2 Duo E6600

I figured that would give a good variety of processors.

I also have the following (not currently attached). If there is something in particular with one of these that you need to test for, just let me know.

Pentium III 600mhz
Pentium 4 530
Pentium 4 650
Pentium D 820
Pentium D 930
Pentium D 940
Pentium D 950
Xeon 5060 (x2)

I attached 2 linux machines today.

Fedora Core 3 - Docking app exits after just under 300 seconds. This machine is running the 5.4.9 boinc core client. hostid = 216

RHEL3 - attached but no results reported yet. This machine is running the 5.2.13 boinc core client because it is a text only machine and the later versions of the core client are a problem to get running as a service on it. hostid = 223

I only run stock boinc core clients downloaded from the BOINC website.

Do you intend to move to 6.10?

I've got 6.10, should I go back to 6.06LTS?

Yep, seems to be working just fine. I was mildly curious why zombie67 hadn't moved up.

Sorry. I moved my linux machines back to xp before 6.10 came out. So I stopped looking in on this thread.

Jobs would stop for no apparent reason. Required too much baby sitting.

That probably was the "ulimit" issue. If you want to go back to Ubuntu, 6.10 seems to run pretty well.

Was that work units getting an error and returning it to the projects server or was it the situation where the BOINC client and workunits are still executing, but are all sleeping and using no CPU time?

I've seen the case where the BOINC client case just goes to sleep and leaves all the work units sleeping. They show up in top on Linux, but all use 0 % CPU time. In the BOINC forums, I've heard this blamed on Rosetta@Home and some people even say it happens under Windows too, but only rarely. With the 5.2.x or 5.4.x client, it could take several days or even weeks for the freeze to happen on Linux. With the Linux 5.7.x client, you could make this happen within hours by setting the BOINC preference for percentage of CPU used to something less than 100 percent. That causes the newer BOINC clients to put the project application to sleep and then wake it up every few seconds, so that it averages something in the vicinity of the CPU percentage you selected. My guess would be that either there's something being overwritten that trashes the sleep/wakeup phase or there's a memory leak somewhere. I have also personally seen this freeze occur on WinXP with a 5.8.x BOINC client, but it takes much longer. In all cases where I experienced it personally, the machines were running a mix of Rosetta and other projects. I don't recall seeing it happen on WinXP with the 5.2.x or 5.4.x clients, but it could just happen so rarely that rebooting WinXP because of monthly updates or new program installs happens first.

They think they finally found and fixed this for 5.8.4. The scheduling logic was looking in the wrong place for currently running status. So it would think a task was still running when it had actually been stopped.

Nope, I had fix implemented. This was not a problem unique to this project. All projects had the problem, across all linux machines. The jobs would just stall, and the activity monitor would show just the normal OS activity. Quitting and restarting BOINC would solve the issue...until it happened again a day or several days later.

I guess I just haven't run enough BOINC under Linux yet to see this issue or else I saw it and didn't recognize the symptoms.

I used to have this issue with 5.4.9 but 5.4.11 has cleared it up.

I must be in the "HR" situation.

One PD945 gets plenty of WUs, one PD805 doesn't.....close to same CPUs...??

My AMDs all get work...3700+, 2400+, 3400+ and Opteron.....all different CPUs...??

I don't know which CPUs are in which HR class.

*grin* It always helps to grumble a bit. If nothing else, it makes you feel better. Sometimes, it even works. I think this is related to the rule that makes the phone ring with an important call while you're in the shower or have gone outside to the mailbox :-)

Seriously, the problem sort of comes and goes, on both Linux and windows boxes. There are times when it seems to me like it's related to whether the CPU is AMD or Intel. It will be interesting when they get the new tool written to see what is really happening.

I have my Windows to Linux GUI worked out, so I will be converting four boxes from Windows to Linux during the next couple of days.

They're AMD CPUs.

Where are you short of boxes for HR purposes?

Thanks!

In the next couple of days we will come out with a new dynamic web page that will give everybody an exact overview of which HR classes are waiting for machines in the shared memory. What we currently see is that there is a LOT of work waiting for classes Intel/Linux and Intel/Darwin.
