hi all,
Please post your feedback on the screensaver in this thread.

The high level tab does not work on the interactive mode yet.

Here are some instructions for the screensaver:

Keyboard Shortcuts:

Arrow Keys Translate in the direction pressed
+ or = Zoom in
- or _ Zoom out
< or , Rotate left
> or . Rotate right
m Switch between “Min Energy” and “Min RMSD” views

(ligand and complex only)
1 Change to VDW representation
2 Change to CPK representation
3 Change to line representation

Mouse Buttons:
Left Click Select Tab or Button
Hold Rotate object (only when in model view window)

Full screen Mode:
To run the application in full screen mode, set BOINC as your screensaver. It will now run in full screen mode while your screensaver is running.

cheers
Arun

I don't have BOINC set as screensaver - I have my display set to power down after 15 minutes.

If I open the BOINC manager (5.10.45), go to the tasks tab, and select the running docking WU then the "show graphics" button is no longer grayed out. When I press "show graphics", a window opens with the title "charmmscreen". The windows content is solid black and never shows anything else. I tried maximizing it, but it still shows just a solid black window.

WinXP Pro with Intel 845G integrated graphics.

Windows Vista home Premium with Intel GMA 950 integrated graphics.

I tried the different keys you mentioned in your post but never got anything in the window except solid black.

I tried resetting the project and I still get the same results.

I tried stopping BOINC entirely and re-starting BOINC but that didn't help either.

Please note, I'm not running BOINC as a service on either machine. It's just running as a regular program (Yes, I have to approve it for UAC each time the BOINC client starts on Vista). I don't know if not running as a Windows service makes any difference.

I tried 'show graphics' and activated the screensaver. Both screens are black.

Host ID 805 Task ID 2080

Pentium M processor 1.73GHz
XP Home SP3
Intel 915GM/GMS, 910GML integrated graphics
BOINC 5.10.45 BOINC is running as a normal single user install.

Key usage has no effect on the black screen.

So far I don't see any big problems with the graphics. Shortcut keys and tabs work well.

I'm using BOINC version 5.10.45 - single user installation w/o screensaver option on both my attached machines. (I'm using "show graphics" instead.)

1) P4 3.6Ghz HT, 1 GB RAM, Win XP SP2 32-bit, ATI Radeon X800 graphics card - screensaver worked after detaching and re-attaching

2) Dual Core T7700@2.4 Ghz, 4 GB RAM, Win XP SP2 64-bit, NVidia Quadro FX 360M graphics card - screensaver worked right from the start. ;-)

Could every one having the blank screen problem detach and re-attach? Then post again if it still does not work.

David Ball, are you using boinc view? Another volunteer noticed that detaching and reattaching through it didn't work.

"Detaching worked. Re-attaching did not work via BoincView ... for some reason it couldn't see that I had a host that was no longer attached. However when I went over to the box and used the boinc client to re-attach locally, it worked."

Checkpointing with CHARMM has been very challenging in the past but we have been able to implement it successfully. We will look at the problem and keep you posted.

David Ball, are you using boinc view? Another volunteer noticed that detaching and reattaching through it didn't work.

I used the standard boinc manager that comes with the boinc client and did a reset project. It downloaded the application again as you can see from the logs in my original post. If you'd like, I can detach completely, delete any docking related files that I can find, and then re-attach manually.

Yeah, go ahead and detach and reattach completely, it seems that even resetting will not fix the issue.

I got a WU and the screensaver now works on that machine. (EDIT: This is the one where I not only detached/attached but also went looking for docking related files and deleted them including the slot where it had been running.)

On my other machine (Vista), I did a simple detach from docking followed by attaching the project again. I used the standard BOINC manager (I don't even know how to do it from BoincView). It's now working on this machine also.

Note: Resetting the project only downloads the application and the single WU ".inp" file. Detaching completely and then attaching the project again downloads a bunch more files in addition to those. Resetting doesn't fix the screensaver. A detach project followed by an attach project DOES fix the screensaver.

I tried the different views (Protein, Ligand, Complex, Resources) on the low level menu, and the zoom/rotate. I also rotated the model with the mouse and it worked great.

The "m" to switch between “Min Energy” and “Min RMSD” views seemed to make minor changes on the Ligand and Complex views but I don't know enough to know if the little wiggle I saw was correct. (EDIT: It looked kind of like a very minor rotation of the Ligand.)

The only problem I found was:

(ligand and complex only)
1 Change to VDW representation
2 Change to CPK representation
3 Change to line representation

This works for the Ligand view (and is very obvious), but I can't see anything changing on the Complex view.

Good Work!

I'm going to bed soon but will be around tomorrow.

Just FYI, I think that is a BoincView problem as it only happens on one box out of my 4, and I've now confirmed it fails on that host repeatedly. Well, it still seems weird that I can use BV to detach/attach that box to other projects, but even so this BV behavior seems either irrelevant or lowest possible priority for Docking. Especially as I'm not sure BV is maintained any more.

I don't think your alone, also mine was showing a black screen.
Maybe future units will have this "high level" included.

As Abel said... Robert did a very good job.
I like the tabs and the zoom/rotate functions.

EDIT: I found it in Arun's first post here:

I can see, rotate and zoom the protein, ligand and complex on Vista, XP and SuSE 10.2 Linux. On all platforms, the resources page shows a slowly filling can denoting percentage completion, but the two X-Y plots under that are blank.

I don't normally run the graphics so do not know if this is correct, or if I need to leave it active for longer.

Yes, this is known behavior. The current strategy for loading the graph and the percent progress bar come from a single file which is updated every so often called percentdone.txt. The problem with this is that it doesn't contain a history of the status and only has the last value. So the Min Energy and RMSD shown in the graph are only the current ones found in the file. Since there is only one value no line can be drawn and you won't see anything in the graph.

Right now we're looking into a way to make this look a little nicer. I'll keep you posted.

Okay, it is of no concern to me as I don't view the graphics anyway, but Michela had asked for reports on the screensavers functionality across platforms in this thread .
