Hello,

I guess we could need some more Pentium II and Pentium III running Windows, because I notice quite a lot of 'Unsent' workunits for this class.

So if you could switch on a few more of these, my fellow crunchers?

Regards

Alex

I have an Intel PII 333 with 192 MB that I could fire up but I don't know if the project will support WIN 98SE. It's been off for a while but it used to crunch Rosetta just fine.

We know that our workunits crash on win95 and 98. This machine would be a nice target for a linux setup though :-) OpenSuSE is my favorite distribution and very easy to install. You can download ISO's from www.opensuse.org.

Cheers

Andre

Andre,

I'll look into it further but I've never installed Linux and don't know much about it except how to navigate around. The SuSE site says I need 256 MB which I don't have. I tried to upgrade it a year ago but I couldn't find the RAM I need even at the used parts stores. That's why it's retired now. The one Linux box I have FC5 on was installed for me by a neighbour.

Hi Bill,

You'll need 256 if you are going to install a full desktop and so on. If you install a barebone system, with bare X windows, you'll be able to run boinc fine (I think you can even run it without X if needed, but that means command-line only). The Windowmaker or fvwm2 window manager will be sufficient and don't use much memory if you need a GUI. Another easy-to install distro is Ubuntu (www.ubuntu.com). Their distro loads from a bootable CD so you can try it out and sees if it will work for you on your hardware; if you like it, there is a install icon on the desktop. BTW Suse has a live-cd version as well if I remember correctly.

Cheers,
Andre

I'll second that. I'm a Windows user from way back (OK, late last century), but have recently (this month) switched my main computer to Ubuntu. It's still dual boot but is running Ubuntu Linux almost exclusively now.

Biggest problem I had was with wireless nework setup (took hours to find a suitable driver) but other than that it's been quite smooth sailing.

It has a BOINC package too.

Damn Small Linux or Puppy Linux are probably better candidates for this box, both come as LiveCDs and both will give you a graphic desktop on marginal hardware.

Thanks for the replies. I'll look into those. It's been a good reliable machine for a long time and I can't bring myself to dump it at the recycle depot.

(K)Ubuntu should run fine on such a setup. the Live CD may not (id try anyway) but the alternate install would. Maybe get your friend to install it for you.
I have posted a guide on how to setup a Kubuntu Linux cruncher on the BOINC@AUSTRALIA team wiki . Id have a go at that if i was you. Sorry the guide isn't as good as i would like but im hoping to get a better version on my website in the near future with pictures and all.

If you want Ubuntu, but a very small/light/fast install, go with Xubuntu.

"Xubuntu is a complete GNU/Linux based operating system with an Ubuntu base. It is lighter on system requirements and tends to be more efficient than Ubuntu with GNOME or KDE, since it uses the Xfce Desktop environment, which makes it ideal for old or low-end machines, thin-client networks, or for those who would like to get more performance out of their hardware."

I received the first 93.14 credits for my Pentium III . Great! Thanks a lot, Joseph Mornhineway and Contact. A special thank you to Contact, who got an invalid due to the 5.03 versus 5.04 issue.

Alex

I've got a PII running Gentoo Linux. Now that I've attached it to Docking@Home, I'll have to see how things go.
