Will Docking be worked on over the summer. Is there some kind of schedule ?

Hi David,

Michela will soon publish the plan for what will happen over the summer, but for sure we will have to shut down the system in late June for the move to Delaware. We'll probably open up again somewhere in September when the new infrastructure is in place. People will have to detach the project before we shut down and reconnect their clients to the new url after the move.

Is there a shut-down date set yet? Or when you will stop producing WUs?

Just noticed it.

Thanks for the info. And if you can give us a couple of days warning before you pull the plug, I'd appreciate it. That way I can push my pc's to finish all the WUs that I am hoarding. :)

The critical piece: Once all results are returned, *please* export all the stats for several days. Let the stat sites catch up. Then shut down.

When all WUs are gone, we will send everybody a personal email to detach from the project, because the url will change later on. When we are back online with the new url another email will follow to please attach again.

Cheers

Man! Those last ~30 results waiting to be sent must be some really funky flavor. None of my machines seem to match the HR. I have

OSX/PPC
OSX/Intel
WinXP/Pentium D
WinXP/Core 2 Quad
WinXP/Xeon x5355
WinXP/AMD X2
WinXP/Pentium M

And all are reporting the work is for something else.

I'm surprised how short a time it took to get rid of 1200 workunits :-) Let's see how these last 30 or so are doing and if they stay too long, we'll have to cancel them like we did last time.

Thanks everybody for your help!

Do you want us to stay attached for a while, even after all the results have been shipped? I assume there will be some about of results in progress that will timeout/not validate/get aborted, and will need to be re-issued.

HR information on the WUs left might be a good idea, this way we can look for that type of machine... let's see who gets the last D@H Texan WU :)

Just looked, there are only 10 wu's left now. I can't get them either, (Intels and Windows NT4, or XP).

The end date is 29th, so presumably we should stay around until after that to catch any re-issues.

Good luck with the move, I'll be here when yuo get back!

My Core Duo Mac just downloaded one. It is a re-issued result.

It has 4 returned results, and it still has not validated (!).

I have somrthing like 200 workunits cached across 20 machines. If it would help to finish off these workunits, and there are no problems with them being re-issued to others, I could abort a portion of them so others could help finish them off and allow the powers that be to begin the process of "moving to a new home".

That is over 10% of the work in progress, according to the server status page. How long do you figure it will take you to return them all?

Looks like the Project can wait on Zeppelin to finish all the WU's he has. He must have sucked up every thing in site, according to the Stats Site's he's the only 1 turning in any amount of work over the last week. I wondered why I couldn't get any more all of a sudden ... 0_o

hehe ... It's no problem, I've gotten my share of them and was too busy running other Projects or I might have sucked them all up before Zepplen got ahold of them ... ;)

I got mine cleared out yesterday but still have a call in for more in case any more overdue 1's get sent out down the road.

I've been picking up 1 here and there too, just got 1 in fact ... :)

Must have a couple of other ones some where on my PC's, my results show I picked up 3 today & their waiting to run, I'll increase my Resource Share so they'll run faster, I had it pretty low, just enough to maybe pick some up if the PC connected at the right time ...

Now with Docking and Proteins on hiatus, Predictor in a dubious state and SIMAP still a week away from new work, the BOINC biology choice is a little meagre. Rosie goes on of course and MCDN always gets a crunch. I've picked up Tanpaku in my portfolio for the summer at least.

SIMAP came and ran dry in less then 2 days. They are suggesting next months run will be bigger, and are investigating a different work issue policy rewarding fast turn-round rather then cache loaders.

Hello! People have successfully moved to Delaware, next step is getting the equipment ordered and set up. Hopefully that will all have been done by end of August, beginning of September.

Good to see some of you have stuck around :-)

Hi Andre,

I was wondering if the forum will revert to the July 14 backup when it begins on the new server in Delaware ?

Glad to hear the people have finished moving. Moving is one of the most dreaded things I know of!!!

How do you like Delaware?

Yes, there is a change that we will have to revert to the last backed up version of the forum database, although we'll try to make a delta backup from the system that is still in EP.

Delaware is great: it's so nice and green here and I am actually glad to see a lot more rain here! We were lucky if we got 2 or 3 days of rain in the year in EP :-)

Cheers,
Andre

Hello everybody,

unfortunately, there was a problem with the order at the university about three weeks ago, but we got that resolved and it went to Penguin. Now it is stuck in Penguin somewhere and no equipment has arrived yet :-( We are trying to find out where we are on this and hopefully will soon find out. We're very sorry that this is taking so much longer than anticipated!!! But great to see that you guys and galls are still sticking around! We'll post some more news when we find out where our servers are stuck.

Cheers
Andre

A little bit of good news (I guess!): Penguin just gave us a shipping date of Oct 19; they explained the wait was due to supplier delays of memory they use in these machines. Shipping will probably be around 3 to 4 days or so, then we have to unpack and install all the equipment in racks, followed by installation of the OS, db and all the boinc software and finally playing back the backed up data from the utep machines. I think we should be able to start again around SC'07 (Supercomputing 2007 conference in Reno, Nevada that starts at Nov 12). That's a conservative estimate, so I hope it will be sooner than that.

Cheers!

Hello everybody,

Two of the servers have arrived and docking.cis.udel.edu has been configured with OS and is on the internal UDel network. We will open the external firewall as soon as we have restored the data on the machine and done some tests to make sure everything is still working as it should. Our test machine, docktest, has not arrived yet, but should be here next week.

We really appreciate that you guys have hung around here and are keeping the spirits up!

Thanks,
Michela

Hello everybody,

Two of the servers have arrived and docking.cis.udel.edu has been configured with OS and is on the internal UDel network. We will open the external firewall as soon as we have restored the data on the machine and done some tests to make sure everything is still working as it should. Our test machine, docktest, has not arrived yet, but should be here next week.

We really appreciate that you guys have hung around here and are keeping the spirits up!

Thanks,
Michela

YAY!!!!

What awesome news! I'm looking forward to doing some docking again.

It's great to see that you are getting the new equipment, finally. Are you getting new applications too?

Thanks,
Bill

That's wonderful news, Michela!

As soon as you give the word, I have 5 machines ready to attach to docking :)

BTW, the latest version of the BOINC client (5.10.2x) has a fix in it that might help with the problem on Quads. I encountered the problem on another project. When I updated the BOINC Linux client to 5.10.21, it stopped showing so much time spent in the OS kernel and the application ran faster. It will be interesting to see how the Docking application performs on a quad core with the new version of the BOINC client software.

Since Michela hasn't gotten herself a sysadmin yet (she's working on getting a good student in the group to work on the machines) I'm helping her with getting all the (old) utep data on the new docking machine and getting this thing running again. Probably with the latest app version we used in utep; she needs new students that will work on new app versions too :-) (anyone interested?)

Cheers

Hi Andre,

Unfortunately my student days were about 3 decades ago or I'd be interested.

Things could be worse, someone could have mentioned that it is nearly Christmas.

I wondered if the day long outage 25th November was indicative of something, but guess not.

Here's a thought: Join the WCG Christmas race (many health-related sub projects, for all machines & OSs). By the time we get back, D@H will be back! ...I hope!

I'm looking forward to seeing it start again. I see that there are still a lot of open positions in the Global Computing Lab so I suspect that is what is holding things up now. I wish that more of the team from utep had been able to move.

Yes, Michela's postdoc has arrived in Delaware. Arun has started working on the D@H project last week and is getting up to speed on everything BOINC right now. This project should start to feel a little bit more alive very soon now :-)

Andre

PS Michela is in Miami this week for the IPDPS conference. I think she is also meeting up with David Anderson and people from the WCG project somewhere this week.

It was a while ago when we updated our volunteers. In the meanwhile Arun Rajendran has joined our group as a post-doc and will dedicate his time to make sure that D@H will be back for this summer. Stay tuned!

Can't wait... ;-)

I am Arun, the new postdoc. I am playing with boinc right now and getting familiar with the docking project. We are working hard to get docking alpha version back functioning in June.
