1. Correct. rss does not work yet. We're working on it.
2. Another user mentioned this as well. Don't know why this doesn't work, but we're checking it out.
Thanks for the comments!

You might want to check with Tigher, the project head/admin at http://neuron.mine.nu/neuron/
(which unfortunately just went down for 2 days for maintenance! -- I think Tigher is active on the SETI boards too, don't know about others)

Most of the bugs I've seen here are the same -- not surprising if it's an out-of-the-box BOINC distribution. Tigher's already been in communication with the Boinc devs about them. I don't know that they're FIXED, mind, but they're ahead of you in running into them...

Things I remember include the RSS feed not working, being unable to save a signature in message board preferences, several other php/html bugs. There were others but I can't get Project Neuron's site to remind myself, sorry!

This bizarre right-justification of text is unique to Docking@Home though :)

The too frequent disk writes was also an issue there. I'm sure they could give you some fixes for the majority of the BOINC problems inherited.

Hello Cori!

Now, that you mention it:
I think Docking still lacks a nice logo.
And Cori is well known for her logos.
So, wouldn't it be nice to ask her for something fitting?

Finally I got an idea about a new project logo. ;-)
I'm posting a link to the logo in original size as it would mess up the boards here (I think everyone dislikes horizontal scrolling...) and a resized image of how it could be implemented into the main page:

Logo 1695x138 pixel

Hi there Cori,

I am working together with Andre and Michela on the Docking project and have been currently asked to look over the logo. I like your idea for the banner and was wondering if you'd be willing to help out with a smaller logo. We would be using this logo to link to docking@home from other sites so the logo would need to be smaller. Let me know if you are interested and if you have any ideas :)

Ok, I took a stab at it too, just for variety's sake.

Here is a link to the header:

And here is a smaller version of the same graphic:

Hey atomic,

Thanks for the variety. I like the idea as well, I will present the various ideas to the group and see
which ones they like.
If anyone else is willing to take a stab at this as well, please feel free to do it.

Hi Daniel,

If there is anything specific you would like to see included in the graphics (ideal size requirements, preferred file types, color schemes, text placement, blank space for announcements, etc.), please let me know. The smaller one (for linking) is the same height as all the other project logos on the BOINC Stats site. Other than that, I wasn't really sure what you were looking for, but I do a lot of this type of stuff for fun, so it's not a big deal for me to come up with others or adjust the ones I already made.

~Atomic

Hi Daniel!

Didn't come in earlier so I just read your reply.

Of course I will help with a smaller logo. Which size should it have?
Maybe we can take just the left from the banner for the small logo?
You can also mail me (guess you can look into my account and get my email addy from there?)

Cheers, Cori :-)

Again, it only takes moments to make further alterations. I can resize, change colors, center or enlarge the text, whatever you like.

Yes, noticed that on other message boards. Even gals call other gals 'guys' on these threads! *LOL* (At least when not one special person is adressed.)

Maybe I'm biased as a team member, but I prefer the more intricate design of Miss Booty's. Shift the color a little more towards the blue spectrum, overall it evokes the main webpage very nicely.

Yeah, it is a little on the purple side now that I look at it again. I am on my way out the door, but I will post a "bluer" blue one when I return tomorrow.

Okay, here are some more tweaks. I did 2 versions of each, one set the identical layout, the other set has the text centered and enlarged.

Original layout in a "bluer" blue:

Centered layout:

Oops, I uploaded the wrong file for one of those!

Here is the jpeg file for the centered header layout. I also removed the Boinc logo from it. It seemed too unbalanced, and this way the webmaster can put it (the Boinc logo) wherever they want and make it clickable. For the record, this set is my favorite of all the versions I have done, and I like Cori's submission very much too. I guess it will come down to whether you prefer simplicity or detail; but I think either choice would suit the project nicely.

The finally final header in bluer blue

hhmmm both are great.

on miss atomic's logo I like where the protein is shifted all the way to the left, just my personal opinion.

Also I was thinking of instead of deciding over one or the other, to combine them:
for example I really liked the protein and ligand kind of things in the back groun from Atomic Booty and the blurness kind of effect on the logo from Cori.

well these are my two cents and take this from a guy that is color blind and the colors that I can distinguish I cannot combine them, and my desing skills are at about -3.75

I think both are very good, And also like the idea of having a pole/vote to see which one is liked the most like what was done at HashClash.

Apologies for the long wait, folks. My very pregnant sister went into labor last Thursday and we have been out of state ever since (and me without my computer!). Here are the final designs for the header and logo, incorporating my graphic background with Cori's arial style font. I hope you are pleased with them ;)

Here is the header

And here is the logo:

If you'd like an even smaller logo (or a longer header) I can do that pretty easily. Also, I left the BOINC logo off the header so you would have the freedom to place it wherever you wish; but if you would like it added or need a resized BOINC .gif, just ask. (I'm staying put for awhile I promise!)

Cheers!

Hi Atomic,

Congrats with your sister's baby! Is it a boy or girl?

I was wondering: to satisfy my personal curiosity, could you make the header without the black outline around the font? I have the feeling that might be nice (although I'm not a graphics designer :-)

Thanks!
Andre

Hi Andre,

It's a girl! (8 lbs. 6oz.)

Yes, it is possible to remove the outline from the text, but it gets quite washed out by the background:

Like this

If you are really dead set against the black outline, I can play with it some more and see if it looks any better beveled or something. The trouble is that there are both light and dark objects behind the text, so changing the text color doesn't really help. This was actually why I originally decided to use an outline in the first place, the separation keeps the text looking crisp regardless of what is behind it.

I actually like it :-) It gives the whole thing a 3-D feeling (hmmm, what about a 3-D font with some depth? Maybe that shows up better?)

But you're right, the text does get too washed out against the background. Anyway, thanks for showing me; I let Karina handle this since she's our student web guru!

Cheers
Andre

Hi Everybody,

Cori, Karina and I have been hard at work behind the scenes, collaborating to get a graphic that everyone (or most everyone ) can be happy with. I have made one more adjustment myself to the text based on your feedback, substituting a subtle "drop shadow" effect for the black outline.

Header here

And logo:

As you can see, this gives the text the sort of 3D effect that Andre liked, while retaining a visual separation from the colorful background. I have also sent blank (textless) versions of my graphics to Cori to work her magic on. I think she is going to be busy for a couple days, so we ought to see something from her this weekend. I'm sure it will be worth the wait! Just wanted to keep you posted on where we were at on this. We are all anxious to get this little project complete and see it up on the D@H website.

Cheers!

Hello everybody!

After a busy work week I finally had time for the really important things to do... ;-D (And besides that night times are great for creativity...)

I've put the text style with the "blue glow" from my logo on Atomic Booty's background. Also I changed the alignment of the text for the banner, so that you can see more of the beautiful proteins in the background.
For the logo the text remained centered though as it has a smaller width. But look for yourself:

Now, nice weekend to everybody and greetings to Atomic Booty and Katrina! :-)

Yeah! I knew I'd seen her somewhere and Bladerunner is where it was :-) I haven't seen that flick in a long time; maybe it's time to blow the dust of the dvd cover and watch it once more...

Is that true only for .png or will renaming a .jpg or .gif work as well?

I don't think every and all browsers support favicons. IE6, safari, firefox seem to show them though. You might have found the first (of numerous to come) bugs in IE7 :-)

I said format, not extension. And the favicon is requested by the browser, it's independent of webserver.

I'm sure all browsers understand this by now. Works fine for me on Linux (Firefox, Konqueror), Mac (Safari does, Firefox doesn't seem to understand) and Windows (IE, Firefox, haven't tried Opera).

Thanks

So how many headers are you responsible for now?
I know you did HashClash and RCN and now this one......are there any more I don't know about?

Yes, great job all around, gals! It was a lot of work (at times painstaking!), but it was well worth it. Every time I visit D@H now, I am greeted by the familiar sight of the fruits of our labor, and it makes me smile.

Thanks to all who gave their input on making this graphic the best that it could be, and extra thanks to Cori and Karina for a rewarding collaborative experience.

I would like to thank Cori and Mrs. Atomic Booty because of the great job they did with the logo. I really like it and just so that everybody knows it was shown in our Web page at the Supercomputing Conference 2006 and it made the project look very professional. Yay for our logo!!

*Grin* How did you know? ;-)

Just finished a badge to celebrate our team UotD's.

And I also made a desktop picture for the QMC birthday competition (sorry, German language only) today. (For all those heavy crunchers who avoid using a screensaver. *LOL*)
A design for a big coffee mug from me is already put on the page as well as several designs for BOINC skins and various other things from many participants.
Now we wait when the voting will start. The winner will get 6 months computing time from one of the hosts at the university for his/her account. *grin*

I like that idea about the skin design competition. Anybody interested in making something for D@H? We'll have to think about an appropriate price though :-)

I think I'm gonna give Cori a headstart on this one... ;-)

But if someone could provide me with some nice Docking graphics, I will do my best to make it a nice competition.

Price... hmmmmm... if all goes well, I'm of this afternoon to buy myself an Alfa Romeo.. so cash is wellcome... LOL

*LOL* Rene, you should have said "I'm buying a new D@H cruncher!" *grin*

I must admit I'd like to give it a try as well, but I'm confused with what is actually needed for a skin.
I know there's a basic layout for skins to download at the Berkeley site, but: how do I have to implement buttons, tabs, highlighting of buttons when entering and such?
I'm no programmer and I don't know if these details have to be separate graphics. So when I started once to try a very simple skin I gave up because I was too confused. ;-(

The best would be if someone gave me instructions like: "The buttons needs to be a .png with 50x50 pixels and make a 2nd one for the "highlighted" version!"
*LOL*

As for the price: read my sig, hehe. Ok, some extra cobblestones would be appreciated as well. :-D

Thanks
Andre

To be honest it's not that difficult... ;-)

What you can do is download a skin that's ready... that way you end up with a correct skin.xml and you also have the correct graphics (buttons and so on...) and sizes.
How the skin works and placement of pictures is handled by the xml... rest is kinda like Lego... background comes first and on top of those the "graphic puzzel pieces".

Just take a look at this one ...

I would not suggest using the xml file of the skins I've maid, when you want to start building one, this xml is set for 2 languages...

Just give it a try... i'm sure you will succeed... ;-)

Edit: the Alfa Romeo did not work out... the photo on the net looked promising, but "in real life" it looked like it was parked in the jungle for a couple of months... and then monkeys decided to make it theire home.
So today I've saved a lot of money... LOL

Woah, looks as complicated as I have feared! *LOL* I hope after a 2nd or 3rd view it will reveal its secrets to me. :-)

And thank you guys for your first helping steps!
I will sure come back to ask several newbie questions, Rene. And if Karina has time it would be also great! ;-)))

Already downloaded the files and I will see what happens if I begin puzzling. :-D

EDIT: Downloaded the files from the second link, but cannot open them with my graphics program. :-(
The Bam skin is better, I can open them all.

And to add a little present I've finished my very first skin for D@H now!!
I'm so happy that I finally got it!!!

Here's the first screensaver:

I've just send a mail to Karina with the whole folder for the skin and the skin.XML for testing it. Hope you like it. And don't hesitate to tell me what I can improve. :-)

Hiya, Andre. Glad you like it! ;-)

And yes, it won't be cheap, all that lasagna. *grin*

EDIT:
I forgot something. In the folder I sent to Karina there's a file called "dah_stat_icon.png". This one must be send by the D@H server to the attached clients.
It will appear in the projects' box ("My Projects") in the simple gui. If there's none on the server the default BOINC icon will appear instead as you can see in the screenshot.
Maybe the file has to be renamed to "stat_icon.png" and it looks like this:

This will also work for other skins. But it will make D@H look different and you can easily find it between all those default icons as not every project has a special "stat_icon" yet. ;-)

I just joined the project. I look forward to making a positive contribution.

So far, not doing so well. Work unit seem to be stuck - not making progress. I posted in the "crunching" forum to see if I can get this worked out.

I also run Seti@home.
