The forum functionality comes straight from the boinc package, so we'd rather not change it just for this project if possible (it would be gone after an upgrade). What if you post a message to the boinc_dev list in Berkeley to request it? That way every project can take advantage of it the modification gets accepted. Rytis Slatkevicius is in charge of the PHP code in BOINC.
Thanks
Andre
Can we get the Edit options changed so that we can edit our messages at anytime?
You can always change it back if it becomes a problem..

I'm pretty sure it's just a setting that *you* change, right? Unless you are doing fresh installs each time, the server side software upgrade will retain previous settings for forum preferences I thought?
Tell me were that setting is and I'll check it out.

The edit function is basically so you can correct typos when first noticed or post a quick addition of more information that might clarify the post without having to start another new post.
I believe the reason for this limit is in the past there would be posts made, and then edited later so the poster could claim he never said that. It lead to some flame wars and more aggravation for users and moderators. Basicly it cuts down on mis-use and bad behavior.
**Something to think about**
I think the time limit should stay the way it is, unless it is changed on all projects so everybody has the same advantage or dis-advantage on any project.
Side note:
Also moderators cannot edit posts, which is a good thing to so they cannot go around editing out what users say, changing the meaning. This avoids users from being able to claim they said something and the moderator removed part of it, or the moderator adding words they did not say to get users into more trouble. I'm glad as a moderator I cannot edit others posts.
