@Conan

I have a good deal working for a pair of 940-pin Opteron 285s.

What is your recommendation for a motherboard?

Thanks.

G'Day j2satx,
I have 2 of these systems (as you are probably aware) which I built myself.
I was looking for SATA-2, PCI graphics ability, Name brand (i.e. well known), reliability, support, availability.
When I contacted my supplier he recommended TYAN.
So looking at available boards I opted for the TYAN S2895A2NRF motherboard. It has SLI graphics if needed, SATA-2 for fast HD transfers and was well known.
I have had no problems with it even when I made a mistake installing my first one and shorted out a number of contacts no damage was done to the board when I corrected the mistake and it has now been running for over a year.
Not the cheapest board but I find it very good.
In Australia it cost me around $700.00 but I know it is a lot cheaper in the 'States.
You may already know this but with Opterons and the TYAN boards you need ECC Registered RAM. There are lots of manufacturers for this but I use LEGEND PC3200.
Excellent processors that get the job done and at 2.6 GHz per core are fairly fast as well.
Hope this helps and all the best with building your new computer, it's very rewarding when you get them working.

I built a server using Tyan for a medical practice and no issues with that. I support it and have never had to do anything but backups.

I actually put the cart before the horse and got a very good deal on the ECC memory first.....then started backing into the 940 Opterons. I have a couple of 939 Opterons that run nice. Since I went 64-bit, they run better than most of the slower Intel Duals I have.

There are lots of two-way and eight-way 940 Opterons available, if the price is right. Must be users moving up to Intel Core Duos.

I'm looking at an S2882-D. I don't care about SATA or PCI-E, as I just use old PCI video cards and slow IDE drives to keep the heat down on the crunchers.

Thanks for your advice.......if/when I get it/them done, you'll see them crunching.
