As some of you have already known, Dr Michela Taufer paid a visit to Leiden University, where one of the BOINC projects "
Leiden Classical
" is hosted, according to the news on the top page of the project. It must be great if this connexion makes a super synergy!

Probably server-side scheduling. With some of their apps, they have exactly the same problems that we have: differences in results between architectures. So what they have done is dynamically partitioning up the shared memory and build a smart feeder and cgi program to handle this. The advantage is of course that you can start optimizing the app for all the architectures you support. The downside is that you will have less machines per HR class, which will make the average validation time for a workunit longer (of course this problem will be negligable if D@H has 100'000 machines equally distributed over the HR classes :-)

Hi andre,
Probably server-side scheduling. With some of their apps, they have exactly the same problems that we have: differences in results between architectures. (Also I see that project have a problem in treating results of a workunit, which hadn't appeared until several months before.) I heard from Michela that the visit was a big success and that the Leiden group have made great strides to setup a visit to their lab in such a short time (thanks Mark!). I'm sure she'll come home with many good ideas and some source code :-) And you're right: hopefully a fruitful collaboration will grow out if this. Because leiden classical is relatively new as much as docking@home, there might be something that can be studied from their experience such as source code, as you mentioned. Anyway I'll crunch leiden classical too:) thank for reading, suguruhirahara ____________ I'm a volunteer participant; my views are not necessarily those of Docking@Home or its participating institutions. |

For those, like me, who can't access that particular paper, you can find an interesting pdf of a paper on
The Effectiveness of Threshold-based Scheduling Policies
, which explains a lot. The paper is by some familiar names: Trilce Estrada, David A. Flores, Michela Taufer, Patricia J. Teller, Andre Kerstens, and David P. Anderson. It seems to be the paper that Michela Taufer presented in Amsterdam at the eScience 2006 conference this month. It was mentioned in the news section on the front page, but the link was to the conference website.
