All WUs run fine on my Vista machines, but on my Win7 64bit boxes I'm getting consistent 0% progress, and the WUs will just keep running and running even when the "To Completion" column in Boinc Manager has run down to zero.

Is there a fix for this?

Hi BF,
I run BOINC 6.10.58 and "W7 32Bit" and had have no problems with wu's.
Maybe to run a newer BOINC version will help

Have you tried to run the BOINC application in a compatibility mode? Haven't done it with BOINC (not running it on W7 64 bit machine) but it does seem to allow other applications to run that fail in native.

Thanks for your replies..

_heinz, I'm running the latest version of BOINC. My 32bit computers run this project fine, it's the W7 64bit boxes that I'm having trouble with..

keyboards, I don't think that the problem is with BOINC, as other projects with 32bit applications run fine on the 64bit boxes. But I'll give your suggestion a go :-)

I am now getting the same problem since switching Win7-64 to a rig with a Q9550 and P43 chipset. All other configurations did run fine (XP 64 on this host or Win7-64 on i7 rigs).

Looks to me as this is related to certain chipsets/hardware under Win7-64. Again, the problem does not occur with any other project, no matter if using 32bit or 64bit applications.

I also have a Q9550 and win7 64 bit and am having the issue of sitting at 0% indefinitely even though the docking processes are running and using cpu time

same to me!

I have the E7400 AND E6600 run under win7 64.runing more than 30h but still 0% yet. And other(E3300,E2160,E2180) run with no problem.

Is the chip style problem or overclock ?

Count me in,
Win 7 (32bit) and Intel P8600 CPU

Same HW runs with Linux 64bit without problems.

Oh, the program runs at 100% CPU, but no checkpointing and progress stay at 0%.
Also I do not find some files I see on other Windows hosts.
Sample filenames (based on my memory)
1ebz1g35.*
screenenergy.*
screenrmsd.*

Will try to create a list from the slot directory tomorrow.

looks I'm not alone...

w7 x64, BOINC 6.12.8 and 6.10.58, Pentium e6300, P45 chipset, 4Gb of RAM.

exactly as u guys described - 0% forever.

Another point to mention: normally charmm app using 32M of RAM, but on that rig - 640k-652k only. I checked q-ty of slots - looks OK.

Another rig (i7-920) and lappy (T9300) run just fine.

I wonder if there is a way to fix it...

Same issue here.. My Win7 64bit docking WU's stay at zero and reset themselves to zero time elapsed every minute or so.

Guess I wont be doing any docking work units any more.

We are looking at the issue. It was not present in the pre-testing phase of the complex on our testing machines.

More very soon,

Michela

This is a report of the jobs associated with 1hvi1hpv.

The testing process that is performed before to distribute a new complex to volunteers did not capture any major problem.

There are 11,684 jobs with server state = over, 692 of them with outcome = client error. It is around 6% of them (including aborted and failing) and the failings come from the same hosts (around 30-40 of them).

The job distributed but not returned are 17,958; the jobs generated but not distributed
are 252; the job to be generated are 0 since we moved on to the next complex.

Please abort jobs with 0% progress. Docking is not a deterministic simulation and some docking attempts can fail. Our testing can successfully capture most of the cases but not all.

Thanks!

It is possible that your signature file got corrupted somehow since I did not see the same problem with other volunteers, could you try reset the docking project? This should update your files. Let me know if this helps!

Thanks!

I am having this on my Win7 x64 (4G Ram, 4core Intel CPU @2.8GHz)
I have just done a reset of the project and will see what happens. This PC has NEVER been able to successfully process a docking WU (as seen by my account WU history). Odd eh?

Looking at these posts it seems that there is a problem
with thr client running in 64bit on older CPU's.

my i7-2600k @ 4.5 churns them out no problem at all.

perhaps it's one of those occassions where certain
motherboard/chipset/cpu combinations just won't work -
which would explain why the problems did not show up in
testing.

it would be useful for people to post their exact cpu &
motherboard if they are experiencing this problem to
see if there is any consistencies between systems

I just switched over a Q9650 from WIN/XP to WIN7 Ultimate and have the same problem. The other XEON-based machines have no such issue. I do note that only two of these WU's are claimed to be running but there are no less than EIGHT separate charmm34_6.23_windows_x86_64 executables running. I don't see this on any of the other machines.

EDIT: Resetting the project got rid of 2 of the 8 processes. The other 6 I had to kill manually. Still shows 0% progress on any WU though.

This is with version 6.12.34 of BOINC which for me has been rock-solid for ages.

The current Boinc server does not allow us to collect enough information to diagnose this problem, nor can we reproduce the same issue on our test machines. We are working on an upgrade of Boinc server and since the team members all have course works during the semester, it takes a little longer than expected. We will keep you posted, stay tuned!

And thanks for letting us know of the issues, we really appreciate this!

Can I ask what the status is with this problem? It looks like my team is gonna visit Docking soon with some CPU power but if this issue is gonna effect a lot of our crunchers they probably will stop cruncing WU's for Docking and that is not what we would like to see...

Same problem here using Win 7 64bit and Q9550. Over 8 hours now apiece and nothing. Amazing how an important project like this can allow this bug to last such a very long time *sigh*

What chipset does the C2Q6600 use on its mobo? The case might be chipset related.

From what i'm noticing, it seems to be people with the G43 chipset that are having the issue. The first time i ever crunched docking was on a G33 chipset. Worked fine. I've also crunched Docking with P67. Again, works fine. But this G43, which is the only rig i have going at the moment, just won't do it.

I have the problem with a G41 chipset mobo. Both G33 and G41 have an integrated graphics core, which most crunchers will disable because a GPU works so much better. Can the disabling of the integrated CPU graphics be the cause of the 0% progress?

My C2Q uses a G33 and I run a GTX 570. So, the addition of a dedicated GPU isn't a problem in my case.

But have you disabled the onboard graphics in the BIOS? A feature under advanced chipset settings, mostly.

Merely adding a GTX 570 will not disable the onboard graphics.

If I'm right, this problem will only occur with systems using a G31, G33, G35, G41, G43 or G45 chipset with disabled onboard graphics.

On my A75 Llano system I have the onboard graphics enabled (for the A6-3500), on my Z68 i3-2100 system I have the onboard graphics enbled for future use of the Intel HD 2000 onboard graphics.

I checked my BIOS and can't tell for sure if the onboard graphics is explicitly disabled, but I don't think it is.

The only setting in my BIOS that's graphics related is called "Init Display First". The options are "PCI Slot" and "Onboard" and mine is set to "PCI Slot". That wording seems to imply that an installed GPU is a first choice rather than the onboard graphics being disabled. I may very well misunderstand, though.

I switched from abc@home to Docking, to take part in the DPC stampede currently underway, but while my old server is happily (slowly) crunching and earning credit, my main PC is crunching and crunching for hours and hours, but progress stays at 0%.

Yes, I have Windows 7 64-bit. And an Intel Core2 Quad 8400.

For the exact machine details see: http://docking.cis.udel.edu/community/show_host_detail.php?hostid=111693

I have aftr 2 days abandoned the original WU's, but the new ones show exactly the same behaviour. After a further 2 days, I'm still stuck at 0%.

The issue was first reported back in 2009 so I feel more than a little disheartened. Can I hope for a possible solution within a very short time period (days) or can I just forget about Docking on this machine altogether?

wu's stuck on 1% or terminated.
When is shutdown and restart. The stuck wu's mostly turn up terminated.

Hi so I have been crunching D@H for years with no issue, I just upgraded my PC from a Dell XPS420 with a Core2 Q6600 2.66Ghz to an Ivy Bridge i7 3770K OCd to 4.2Ghz and at the exact same time I have got the issue on this thread, all WUs sitting at 0% progress and continuing to crunch even though the estimated time has reached zero. My machine didnt come pre-overclocked and this issue occurred even at stock speeds.
Now Im a frugal chap, so I have changed as little as possible from my Dell (which had several upgrades) to the new PC. I can tell you the SSD and HDD are the same items as is the DVD drive and the GPU, the OS is also the same WIN 7 Home Premium 64bit.
The new parts are the case, CPU, Motherboard and RAM, the case is Silverstone and you know the CPU is i7 3770K, the other parts are an MSI Z77A-GD65 with 2x4GB Corsair Vengeance CAS 9.
I have re-installed the OS 2 times, no difference. I have also noticed something else odd about the WU files, I have Norton 360 v6 and it pops up annoying resource warnings that the Charmm (and other project files) are using at least 99% of one cpu. On my old Dell and for other projects you can open the warning and tell N360 not to warn for the file again, however on D@H Norton gives an error saying the file type isnt recognised....

Because I have changed a few parts only, I hope that helps you find the issue.

I've been experiencing the "stuck in 0% progress problem" on one of my Windows7 64bit machines since May,2012.

PC Detail

Recently I downloaded 2 WUs. (1d4i1hih series)
Surprisingly, both of the WUs started progressing! (0% -> 1% -> 2% ...)
And one of them completed, validated, and granted credits!

I didn't change my hardware nor config on my client-side at all, and Application version seems to be not changed, so I don't know why I succeeded.

Following is the WU that I completed :

This computer is running Windows 7 Professional I am using a dual core Intel running at around 2.5 GHz, motherboard is an Intel board using the Intel G41 Express chipset, I have 4gig of memory running at 800 MHz. Everything thing else runs fine including the 10 other BOINC projects I am currently running. But with Docking the progress reports as zero, there isn't any time left being shown but the working time continues to climb. I think I will discontinue running this project for awhile, hopefully I can come back at a later date and the issues wil be resolved. This project works fine on my 32 bit XP machine so I will continue to run it there.

Like so many others here, I am having difficulty with zero-progress workunits under Win7. As I see that the issue seems unresolved, I have disconnected Docking in my account manager.

I sincerely hope that the issue does get fixed sooner or later. If ever I hear that it is resolved, I will return. Until then, TTFN.

I've been running Docking workunits on my 64bit Win7 computer for months now without such a problem. Your computer must be different from mine in some important way to have such a problem.

Also, note that your post is the first post in this thread for about a year. You may need to check whether the date on your computer is set to the correct month and the correct year.

Quite likely, because you are now the only one with this problem and you aren't sending enough information back to the server to identify what the problem is.

Some items that might help us provide information:

What is the update status of Windows 7 on that computer? Is SP1 installed? How up-to-date are you on installing the other Windows 7 updates?

What version number of BOINC are you using?

What is your setting on how much of the memory BOINC can use? Is BOINC allowed to keep workunits in memory while they are suspended, but BOINC is still running?

What number driver are you using for that GT 630?

Could you post some excerpts from the BOINC log file? For example, the first part gives some of the information I mentioned above, and a few recent lines giving the events related to a few Docking workunits may contain other useful information.

I have just joined this project and am having problems with the Docking units not progressing beyond 1:32 before restarting.
I am running windows 7 (64-bit) on a Pentium E5800 3.2GHz dual processor, with 4Gb RAM. All patches for windows are up-to-date.

I have version 7.2.28 (x64) of Boinc Manager.
The model running is Charmm 34a2 6.23 unit name 1hps1ohr_mod0014crossdockinghiv1_60529_71013_0

Is this a known problem with docking and windows 7 64-bit, or is my computer somehow not compatible with this project?

Any assistance / advice greatly received.

Do you run BOINC as a windows service?
Docking doesn't work in this mode (on my win7 64-bit hosts).

No, I am not running BOINC as a service, I have BOINC Manager set to run on login. I have not had any problems with other projects (climateprediction & rosetta).
The last WU that ran for folding, finally gave up with a Computation error. However, I cannot find any output files in the project folder. The only "non-standard" setting I have is that I run BOINC (installation and data folders) on a secondary drive (i.e. D: rather than C:). Could this be an incompatibility with this project? I also found that I kept getting very high CPU usage, which I've not experienced with other projects.
For the moment, I have suspended this project so that I'm not wasting processing time.

I also am having a problem with 64 bit Win 7 and the problem has been ongoing for quite some time and has not been resolved. I see work units that are supposed to take less than 3 hours take up over 24 hours of processor time, tie up both cores, and produce nothing. I am not getting any additional work units. I will check back in a few months and maybe you will have resolved the Windows 7 issues. There are other worthwhile projects that efficiently use my donated time to produce good results.
