Message boards : Number crunching : Unable to Merge Host

( Message 1590 )

I had a similar problem a few months ago. My computer crashed for unrelated reasons, and BOINC freaked out. When I rebooted, I found that BOINC had dumped all of my WU's - including 2 mos of a CPDN model =( -and my computer was suddenly treated as a new host on all my projects. Merging my "new" host with its former self was uneventful in most places, but there were a couple projects that refused to recognize the fact that this was the same system. Since my cache was clear of WU's anyway (sob), I just reinstalled BOINC and that solved whatever kink had been preventing the merge. Hope that helps. Good luck on solving your problem.

Message boards : Number crunching : zero credits for valid result??

This WorkUnit looks valid but gave me 0 and says Invalid... while the others had credits :-(

Looks to me like "Ye Olde P3 problem" . For some reason, the results from Pentium III's do not play nice with others. The developers are aware of this problem, and are still working on a fix. Last I heard, they were discussing designating certain WUs for P3's, separating them from other CPU types so that they would only be matched with other P3's results, much the same way that systems running Linux, Mac, and Windows are grouped separately.

EDIT: Blast it Shrub, you beat me to it!

David, I appreciate for your detailed explanations of things. You have a natural knack for being able to break complicated subjects down into simpler terms that even I can understand. There are a few other folks around here that are also good at troubleshooting/explaining technical issues and happy to help out fellow crunchers; and to all of you, I'd like to say, "Thanks for taking the time."

And I'm a bit proud of myself today... and of the great effort of Atomic Booty and Karina, too! **waves to the girls**
Because the logo header is finally put online! Woo-hoo! :-))

Yes, great job all around, gals! It was a lot of work (at times painstaking!), but it was well worth it. Every time I visit D@H now, I am greeted by the familiar sight of the fruits of our labor, and it makes me smile.

Thanks to all who gave their input on making this graphic the best that it could be, and extra thanks to Cori and Karina for a rewarding collaborative experience.

**waves back**

It's great to finally see it up! It was a pleasure working on this. I think we should all give ourselves a well deserved pat on the back. Hope everything is going well at SC.

I hadn't seen it in awhile until today, but I was still able to download a few WUs before I got the notorious message. I believe Andre had said that thier fix would bring temporary relief, but that the problem would eventually creep back up on us. I think the permanent solution is still in the works.

Please make sure that the boinc developers hear about this as well from as many people as possible. It would be best to fix the problem at the root and not have multiple different project solutions in place that will only confuse people (and more work for the project devs that could be spent on the app).

Andre

Andre, could you please post a link to the BOINC project discussion? You had mentioned a boinc_dev discussion group or email list in response to one of my questions awhile back, but I was unable to find it. You are quite right to send us there to air our some of our grievances. After all, I don't think there's anyone here who hasn't crunched for enough DC projects to know that there are some bigtime problems with the core BOINC client itself. And it's not just the credit issue, there is a laundry list of BOINC bugs that happen with such predictable regularity in every new project that you could set your clock by them.

There is only so much the individual project devs can do, or rather, should have to do. You guys should be concentrating on the science, that's the whole reason we're all here. Until BOINC is made more efficient, it is going to continue to cause frustration all around. =/ You guys (and gals!) have to pull resources to work on debugging, fixes, and workarounds on your end; plus you get the pleasure of listening to the cacophony of complaints about a system that you didn't even write yourselves.

We end up with many more wasted hours on our end as well, whether it's from reporting the same old bugs, implicit flaws in the system's treatment of CPU's and OS's, overly redundant quorums, or overly redundant quorums. As users, I believe we are the only ones who can force them to make the needed changes in a timely manner. If you can point us in the right direction, I am sure that more than a few of us would be happy to politely contribute our knowledge, experience, and opinions about BOINC in a place where it could really make a difference.

Thanks,

Atomic

My computer managed to grab 3 WUs while I was at work today, but I am already getting the dreaded 'Work has been commited to other platforms' message again.
