Message boards : Number crunching : errors on Mac, still ( Message 4822 )Posted 3110 days ago by Paul D. Buck I just tried to run Docking on my Mini and am getting the same message. New application not available yet? Yes liability ... If that person adds a zombie or some other malicious code to the application the project / university is on the hook for the problem ... |

Message boards : Number crunching : Can't attach ( Message 4733 )Posted 3127 days ago by Paul D. Buck Hi Paul and Yankton, Thanks ... Most of us take most of this in stride. My suggestion is to make it part of daily schedule and ONLY do it once a day ... otherwise you can get sucked into spending lots of time here ... but a quick scan daily catches the issues as they come up ... and won't impact your schedule. My bosses hated it, but I did the same thing with phone calls and the messages left on voice mail and e-mail ... I checked once daily ... if they wanted me more than that, they had to come get me ... |

Message boards : Number crunching : Can't attach ( Message 4728 )Posted 3128 days ago by Paul D. Buck They posted again. The message pane says "This project doesn't accept new members" Also stated that attempting to create an account on the site first doesn't work, it's apparently asking for an invitation code. Ah, then the project is actually closed, still, I had forgotten that ... That is one of the issues I discussed on the BOINC Dev forum in relationship to the Account Managers and joining projects. And that the lists of projects should make more clear which ones can actually be joined. For example Chess is likewise closed but still shows up in the list of projects to attach to ... The web page is also misleading in that the statement: NOTE: If you use BOINC version 5.2+ with the BOINC Manager, don't use this form. Just run BOINC, select Attach Project, and enter an email address and password. makes one think that it is possible to join if only you attach through BOINC Manager. One of the problems with some projects is that they know that they have limited work and that a small group of participants may be sufficient to their needs. LHC was in this situation but later opened to be fully available. The problem is that many participants chafe under the inability to get work ... At any rate, in cases such as this, I like a reservation list where people can sign up and if they need more people they get invited in the order in which they applied ... avoids "gold rushes" if and when they open the system ... |

Message boards : Web site : New Docking@Home Website ( Message 4726 )Posted 3128 days ago by Paul D. Buck @Brian, I sometimes worry when I see an effort like this where substantial changes are made and as others commented below, well, if the changes are too substantial they can get you out of synch and become a burden. Which is the only point I was trying to make ... IN BOINC Beta I offered, for example, to make the entire web package W3C and CSS friendly and was told to go away as it was not important ... well, maybe so ... but, compliance with standards does make things work better ... I applaud efforts to make improvements and I can only hope that UCB will not rebuff you if you make a generic package that can be folded back into the code base so that others can benefit from your work. One of the failures in the BOINC world is that far too many times the wheel is reinvented and there is resistance to making it so that the next projects out of the box do not have to spend the time redoing the same things that you are doing ... Having expirimented with CSS I know, for example, that were BOINC Web Templates more friendly to them many projects could make simple changes to the CSS templates and produce radically different looking sites with zero changes to the underlying code base ... Anyway, I am never that far away and plenty of people have my e-mail address (as does your database) feel free to contact me as I may or may not be looking at these forums in the future ... health and 50+ projects (and sadly docking projects are not high on my list of interesting projects, sorry about that...) means that at times I don't look at any projects ... If PM is working I usually set it to notify me so you can try that too I guess ... |

Message boards : Number crunching : Can't attach ( Message 4725 )Posted 3128 days ago by Paul D. Buck I have at least one person on my team who states that this problem has not been corrected as they cannot attach to docking. They've made the attempt with three different computers, and asked someone to post it here as they don't have an account here yet. If they are new attempting to attach ... that might be a different problem. Do they have messages in the messages pane? My computer only needed to fetch one page/file but I think if you are new, there are more things that need to happen, and a page you need to be directed to ... if they moved or renamed THAT page, well, they cannot create an account and sign in ... A work-around to try is to have them create the account first (if I have correctly identified THEIR issue) on the site, then try to attach as an existing user ... it is a different path ... Anyway, something may still be broken ... |

Message boards : Number crunching : Can't attach ( Message 4719 )Posted 3129 days ago by Paul D. Buck Hi Paul, Thanks ... It looks like the systems are now attached ... at least none are pending attachment anymore and I cannot remember which one was pending ... :) Anyway ... thanks ... |

Message boards : Number crunching : Can't attach ( Message 4710 )Posted 3130 days ago by Paul D. Buck Well, if you renamed or moved that file ... when the participant tries to attach, they cannot, because that file is the one that describes the project to BOINC Manager ... Ah, the downside to making major changes ... :) |

Message boards : Web site : New Docking@Home Website ( Message 4703 )Posted 3130 days ago by Paul D. Buck I posted a note in NC about the fact that you moved things around and now I cannot attach because of a missing file ... Other than that, I agree the form looks nice, the issue is that if you are rewriting all the pages you are making a long term maintenance nightmare for the project. Making changes for changes sake is nice, but if you make your site a customization of all the pages of the standard BOINC stuff that means that as they make changes you now have to make similar changes ... Before you get too deep, my advice is to rethink a little to avoid too much code rewrite if possible ... I may be too late, but, I hate to see the project invest so much in a new design that means that you have such a different code base that you radically increase maintenance costs ... I would suggest looking at the use of CSS if possible to make the site look like this (if possible) ... or that you localize the code changes so that as they migrate the code base that you can just drop their stuff in and your customization stays intact ... One other thought is that if you *CAN* isolate your changes in this way you might be able to convince UCB to take your change to the code so that other projects can do similar customizations ... |
