One of the sever changes recently reset the email preference to no email due to some privacy concerns. You need to go to forum preferences and reselect which type of email notifications you want.

I have also had many errors since upgrading my nix machine to 5.9.x. Maybe the next one will work.

This is the proper platform name for 64 bit windows. This is only the 4th project that I know of to support it.

I saw a report on another project that said these CPUs still had a poor FPU although they are better than the previous VIA models.

The new 5.8.11 client seems to allow the ulimit command to work again on my FC6 host.

Message boards : Unix/Linux : Where are the linux alpha testers?

Sorry. I moved my linux machines back to xp before 6.10 came out. So I stopped looking in on this thread.

Jobs would stop for no apparent reason. Required too much baby sitting.

Was that work units getting an error and returning it to the projects server or was it the situation where the BOINC client and workunits are still executing, but are all sleeping and using no CPU time?

I've seen the case where the BOINC client case just goes to sleep and leaves all the work units sleeping. They show up in top on Linux, but all use 0 % CPU time. In the BOINC forums, I've heard this blamed on Rosetta@Home and some people even say it happens under Windows too, but only rarely. With the 5.2.x or 5.4.x client, it could take several days or even weeks for the freeze to happen on Linux. With the Linux 5.7.x client, you could make this happen within hours by setting the BOINC preference for percentage of CPU used to something less than 100 percent. That causes the newer BOINC clients to put the project application to sleep and then wake it up every few seconds, so that it averages something in the vicinity of the CPU percentage you selected. My guess would be that either there's something being overwritten that trashes the sleep/wakeup phase or there's a memory leak somewhere. I have also personally seen this freeze occur on WinXP with a 5.8.x BOINC client, but it takes much longer. In all cases where I experienced it personally, the machines were running a mix of Rosetta and other projects. I don't recall seeing it happen on WinXP with the 5.2.x or 5.4.x clients, but it could just happen so rarely that rebooting WinXP because of monthly updates or new program installs happens first.

They think they finally found and fixed this for 5.8.4. The scheduling logic was looking in the wrong place for currently running status. So it would think a task was still running when it had actually been stopped.

On Ubuntu you have to add the command in the "run_manager" file, simply entering it in the terminal doesn't fix the problem.

Shouldn't you also put it in the "run_client" file?

It depends on how you start the client. If you only use one way then that is the only one you need to modify. I have only changed the "run_client" file since the client is already running whenever I use the manager.

Message boards : Number crunching : How to make hosts "hidden"?

( Message 1868 )

I think 'anonymous' is that persons user name, in the beginning of boinc people didn't realize that the Your 'host' page is different when You look at it (signed in) and hid their hosts because they didn't want their ip address shown, but that info and Your eMail addy doesn't show to anyone else, imho the only reason to hide Your hosts is if You are cheating and want to hide Your inflated benchmarks or are using machines which You don't have permission.

Yes 'anonymous' is substituted for the participants name when hosts are hidden.

In a alpha/beta project it is generally considered improper to hide your hosts since the information provided may help in debugging the project.

Message boards : Number crunching : what is a quorum used for?

The qurom has two major uses. The primary one is verifing that the science is accurate. The other is to equalize credit claims. Both goals can be reached by other means as well, depending on the project.

Ok it's in (I hope).

Looks like I did it right. One task with granted, one pending, and one still running.
