Message boards : Number crunching : Issues with Charmm 5.07 ( Message 3168 )Posted 3756 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] Anybody that has a view on what the state of the boinc client benchmarks is right now? Are linux/windows/macs in the same league now? I just ran a set Twin1 Windows cc5.8.16 1398 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 1657 integer MIPS (Drystone) per CPU Twin2 Linux cc5.8.17 1427 floating point MIPS (Whetstone) per CPU 1794 integer MIPS (Drystone) per CPU I would say these are fairly close |

Message boards : Number crunching : Issues with Charmm 5.07 ( Message 3164 )Posted 3756 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] OK, I'll kick this off. Back to my original report: Hosts ID 5 Completed 7 results for Charmm 5.07 Windows at of 2:44:48 to 2:47:52 (184s difference min-max) which is faster than 5.05 was at 4:20:00 **GOOD** --- ID 1829 - Twin1 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz [x86 Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1] [fpu tsc pae nx sse sse2 mmx] Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition, Service Pack 2, (05.01.2600.00) ID 1932 - Twin2 GenuineIntel Intel(R) Pentium(R) 4 CPU 3.20GHz [Family 15 Model 4 Stepping 1] [fpu vme de pse tsc msr pae mce cx8 apic sep mtrr pge mca cmov pat pse36 clflush dts acpi mmx fxsr sse sse2 ss ht tm pbe nx constant_tsc pni monitor ds_cpl cid xtpr] Linux 2.6.17-10-generic (Ubuntu 6) Twin2 could be either windows(ID:1828) or linux(ID:1932), dual boot. Both use the same BOINC venue settings. You can look at results for host 1828 (Twin2 on windows) vs host 1829 (Twin1 on windows) and see that for Charmm 5.05 the run times all were within the same run time range, average 17000s. Twin1 Completed 6 Charmm 5.07 windows tasks at 11036s to 11376s (340s difference min-max) which beats previous times of ~17000s **GOOD** I compared these times against one other host I found with same processor on docking and they were about the same. Twin2 Completed 5 Charmm 5.07 linux tasks at 16892 to 17323 (431s difference min-max) I do not have and 5.05 times for this host, sorry I just installed linux on it a few days ago. **NEUTRAL** BUT . The windows 5.07 app at on the same speed processor and identical hardware is outperforming the linux 5.07 app. approx 11206s vs 17107s difference of 5901s or 98min or 1.63 hours I could live with a small difference, say a few minutes. **Note** At this time there are no other applications installed or running on these hosts. They were both set up with the O/S, BOINC installed and run, thats it. No modifications to hardware (except memory upgrade, they both have same amount, brand and type.). Bottom line: The WindowsXP hosts can crunch more work per 24 hours for a bigger benefit to science. |

Message boards : Wish list : Windows 98 Support ( Message 2944 )Posted 3780 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] I wish ... (See title) OK, I know there is a problem with the application that at the current time cannot be fixed so Windows98 or WindowsME can run this project. But there are many with this type of host that would like to help. --- Until there is support for this platform, I would suggest 2 things. #1 Change the applications page to say "Windows 2000/XP/Vista" or whatever instead of "MS Windows" #2 Add a minimum requirements page with a link between "read our rules and policies" and "getting started". Kindly expalin why Windows95/92/ME is not yet supported. List minimum required or recommended processor speed, types, brands, o/s, hard disk free space, and memory, if you know these things. |

Message boards : Wish list : Forum Posting Edit limitations ( Message 2943 )Posted 3780 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] The edit function is basically so you can correct typos when first noticed or post a quick addition of more information that might clarify the post without having to start another new post. I believe the reason for this limit is in the past there would be posts made, and then edited later so the poster could claim he never said that. It lead to some flame wars and more aggravation for users and moderators. Basicly it cuts down on mis-use and bad behavior. **Something to think about** I think the time limit should stay the way it is, unless it is changed on all projects so everybody has the same advantage or dis-advantage on any project. Side note: Also moderators cannot edit posts, which is a good thing to so they cannot go around editing out what users say, changing the meaning. This avoids users from being able to claim they said something and the moderator removed part of it, or the moderator adding words they did not say to get users into more trouble. I'm glad as a moderator I cannot edit others posts. |

Message boards : Cafe Docking : Second issue of the newsletter: feedback ( Message 2732 )Posted 3793 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] I'm not sure what to say, something like excellantish. Despite having a bad head ache from staring at a screen all day long, I took time to read the entire issue shortly after receiving it. I think the D@H team is doing an excellent job with this newsletter, It is well laid out and easy to read and understand. So I think for those that might not be fully knowledgeable in this subject can still follow along and comprehend what is going on with the project and being discussed in the newsletter. It helps me stay on top of what is going on, while some of the information might be a repeat of discussions on the forum, it is sometime hard to follow all the discussions. I think this will also keep those that participate but do not have the time to always read the forum up to date and keep them interested in the project. I participate in a lot of the projects, its getting to be too many to keep up with all of them, some I have no clue as to what they are doing and there is just not enough time to even try to follow along. Other projects do not communicate as well and I loose interest. mainly because I can not be certain my time and my computers time is being used wisely so I move on to where it is more clear what it is being used for. Maybe when I retire (half way there) I can keep up with everything, but not now. I give the newsletter three thumbs up. |

Message boards : Number crunching : Homogenous Redundancy? ( Message 2707 )Posted 3805 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] What is the problem with 5.8.17? Linux 5.8.17 is not reporting the full processor information. Look at the list of top hosts and there are a bunch just being reported as 'AuthenticAMD' or 'GenunineIntel' without all the other capabilities. |

Message boards : Cafe Docking : The newsletter ( Message 2681 )Posted 3808 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA] Thanks for the positive feedback Keith! You beat me to creating a new thread for feedback on the newsletter :-) I was just re-reading the first (well only) newsletter in the ' newsletters ' (plural) section of the website. It mentions we might get newsletters regularly in our email. Could you define regularly ? If you are thinking of Quarterly, you only have about a dozen days left to assemble the next issue. Sorry, I couldn't refuse the chance to tease you on this. |

Message boards : Wish list : BOINC wiki ( Message 2680 )Posted 3808 days ago by Krunchin-Keith [USA]
I got myself one for Christmas, Found one (only one left) on sale at $300 off normal already discounted prices with shipping half of everybody else too. Hadn't really intended on getting one but couldn't refuse at this price. Get this 37" LCD Widescreen 1080p HDTV with computer input and 1920x1080 pixel resolution. How little did this cost, before shipping and sales tax $999.99 I can actually operate my system while laying in bed and from 10 feet away have no trouble reading the screen. But mostly I watch DVD's on it while sleeping. |
