Hi Everyone,
So after nearly a month of repairs and a full rebuild of the system I finally had my main machine back up and running. It's been humming along fine the last few days. Then this afternoon it tossed up a series of Charmm failure errors (I see these once in a while, but only on this system). A bunch came through, and then the machine started trying to 'connect to localhost.' It can't seem to do that and as a result isn't crunching anything. In the projects, tasks, messages, and stats tabs there is no text and no sign of work. Every 30 seconds or so the docking at home information comes up, but then disappears.

For a while it was saying I entered an invalid password, but hadn't entered a password.

I've uninstalled and reinstalled BOINC but somehow it remembers me each time and tries to being again knowing which project and what my username is. If I click 'attach to project' I get no response.

I'm running the latest boinc build.
System info: Windows XP professsional, version 2002 SP3

Intel Xeon CPU E5440 x 2 with 3.5 gb of ram.
This same machine has run D@H reasonably well since I started on it in the spring, but it has always given me Charmm errors, usually on the weekend or when I'm out of town.

Having it hang like this is really unusual.

Thanks,
Tony

Update: After letting it run for a while it finally gave me the, "you have entered the wrong password error," but no place to enter a password. Is there a way to detach and reattach to a the project maybe? Clicking attach to project only creates the error, "The password you hav eprovided is incorrect, please try again," but I didn't enter anything. Is there a parameter file somewhere or even a way to REALLY uninstall the program and reinstall with no information saved from before?

Thanks,
Tony

Hi, had 2 problems, 1: UPgrade from BOINC 6.6.36 to 6.6.38 went bad, BOINC had lost the connection to the client and didn't recognise the (8500GT)CUDA device.
Reverted back to 6.6.36. A VISTA host (Q6600;stock)Home Premium x86
2:
Another problem, random faults, on an QX9650 @ 3.67 GHz, WIN xp64 Pro.(SP2)
Only WU's from docking ended in faults.
(System is {very} stable and runs for more then a year, now, @ 3.42GHz)

But after several BOINC UPdates, 6.6.36 on this host, everything works OK.
Problem could have something to do with running a 64BIT O.S. and 64bit BOINC,
but also running some 32bit app.'s, in BOINC, the same time.
And a 9800GTX+ CUDA card, SETI MB & GPUgrid.

Ok, didn't get much help here. Finally had a few minutes and tried updating to an earlier BOINC install from the website and now it appears to be running. Had to abort a zillion tasks so that it could get through the current set before they all expire. Oh well. But finally back in business.

If it happens again, make sure after you uninstall to go to program files and delete the folder, to make sure you get rid of any corrupted config files that are left.
By the way the new 6.10.16 beta version is very stable, well at least on 64bit Vista.

Thanks Heidi, once my RAC has recovered I might try to new beta. I've had trouble with this computer since the beginning that once in a while it throws a CHARMM error. None of the other machines are doing it, and the builds are a little different.

After the uninstall I did delete the BOINC directory and any files I could find related to BOINC and it still 'remembered' who I was and whatever wrong password it gave me. It's strange someone would write a program that would give you a password error, but not let you attempt to correct it. Anyway, seems to be running fine, though haven't downloaded any NEW work units yet. Probably because I have a bunch due today and tomorrow because it was down so long that it's rushing as high priority. Hoepfully they'll make it through.

I've seen something somewhat similar when using some versions of Norton Internet Security that, by default, don't consider the IP address 127.0.0.1 a trusted machine - even though that address means the same machine the connection starts from. Some of the recent versions of BOINC need such a connection, so you might want to check if your security software is interfering with using them.

Are you aware that for the recent versions of BOINC, at least for Windows, there are two BOINC directories instead of just one? One is normally hidden, though, so you may need an extra step to include the hidden directories in the directory listings before you'll see it.

Having the same problems. I'm setting up a development site on localhost to test everything before we go live but i'm unable to figure out how to bypass this issue.
