During checking the list of top participants I found several persons' computers "hidden" and noticed there are some "anonymous" hosts.

There are a couple of questions with that.

1. How can I make my own hosts hidden / anonymous as well?
2. Is there any way to find out whose hosts they are?
3. What are they hidden for?

thanks,
suguruhirahara

Hi suguruhirahara,

Under "Docking@Home preferences", setting the following to "No" will hide your hosts:
Should Docking@Home show your computers on its web site?

It can take a little time to actually hide them.
This feature is there for those who are uncomfortable showing information on the internet. I think the project team can see all hosts. You can't if they are hidden.

As for how an "anonymous" host is created, I'm not sure. Maybe someone else can help here.

Ah, Thanks! I should have been more careful...!
Then another question naturally comes up... what kind of information "uncomfortable" is:-p

I think 'anonymous' is that persons user name, in the beginning of boinc people didn't realize that the Your 'host' page is different when You look at it (signed in) and hid their hosts because they didn't want their ip address shown, but that info and Your eMail addy doesn't show to anyone else, imho the only reason to hide Your hosts is if You are cheating and want to hide Your inflated benchmarks or are using machines which You don't have permission.

I cannot help agreeing with your opinion. In fact I cannot find out which information is related to the privacy of each participants. (IP isn't shown to anyone except the owner of hosts, is it?) Also I know several hosts which are anonymous and definately use the modified client.

To be honest I think that option is no necessary for this project at least.

Yes 'anonymous' is substituted for the participants name when hosts are hidden.

In a alpha/beta project it is generally considered improper to hide your hosts since the information provided may help in debugging the project.

I have encountered at least one interesting case where there was a good reason for keeping a host hidden. Apparently Intel (or someone who gets very early engineering samples) lets the engineers run unannounced CPUs on BOINC, probably to exercise them and check if they return good results. They have to keep them anonymous until Intel officially announces that they exist.

Yep. I wonder _who_ that could be? =;^)

The Docking@Home team would definitely appreciate if you keep your hosts not hidden for now; it will make our problemshooting much easier on when somebody reports a problem on the forum; it will take us 5 steps more to have to go into the database and do sql queries to find things out all the time. This is an alpha project after all so no reason to hide hosts :-)

Thanks!
