Good News - I see a new Mac user "bolero" from Team Seti-Germany

Bad News - He is using a modified client that artificially inflates the computer benchmark and claims 85 credits instead of 18 credits.

You should nip this in the bud as it can cause real havoc and bad feelings for obvious reasons.

I've written an email to Bolero asking him to get his benchmark numbers straight. Since we grant the average/middle amount of claimed credit it doesn't matter too much I guess for the moment. We are also in the process of changing our credit policy to make it less dependent on the standard boinc client benchmarks.

Thanks for pointing this out!
Andre

It's not just this user, I've seen several using BOINC client 5.5 which overclaims by at least a factor of 4. The user is usually listed as Anonymous (I know, shocking).

Glad to see you're working on a fix. It's a pity that some people feel they have to resort to unethical means to 'win' something that isn't even a contest.

HashClash as gone as far as telling the server not to send work to a 5.5.0 Client

I just wanted to send bolero an email about this, but a closer look at his/her latest WUs showed that s/he already reacted. The client is 5.4.9, the benchs have been run since and the claims are regular again.

Thanks to him/her from my side.

Sorry for all the trouble, that I seem to have caused. Just wanted to make clear, that this was not an attempt to cheat. The other projects, that I run at the moment, do not make use of the boinc scores for crediting, so for them it makes no difference, which client is used.
Docking seems to rely on these benchmarks, so after reading Billys post in the macnn forum, I have installed a standard client now.

Thanks! We'll hope that we don't have to rely on the boinc benchmarks anymore for the D@H project in a while. That will make life easier for us and our volunteers :-)

That line wasn't actually directed at you. It's for the people with the 5.5.0 client. Just looked like a good opportunity to bring up a similar issue.

Nice one :) As soon as the number of the users is limited (alpha or beta phase) the alternative should be tried because obviously there will be so many people who use the client (of cource including others like truxoft, client calibrated just for SETI@Home) that the real cycles which the volunteers will be giving to this project cannot be estimated/measured correctly, say, the case of R@H. I believe fair competition accelates the advance of the science. The case of Seasonal Attribution Project of CPDN is a good example.
